Childhood

Her family relocated to Petaluma when she was just ten years old. Ryder received her early education at Kenilworth Junior High where she was severely bullied.

In 2000, in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Ryder shared her dreadful experience yet a satisfying revengeful story about her early school years which then went viral.

“I was wearing an old Salvation Army–shop boy’s suit. I had a hall pass, so I went to the [girls’] bathroom,” she explained. “I heard people saying, ‘Hey, faggot.’ They slammed my head into a locker. I fell to the ground and they started to kick the sh** out of me. I had to have stitches. The school kicked me out, not the bullies. Years later, I went to a coffee shop in Petaluma, and I ran into one of the girls who’d kicked me, and she said, ‘Winona, Winona, can I have your autograph?’ and I said, ‘Do you remember me? I went to Kenilworth. Remember how, in seventh grade, you beat up that kid?’ and she said, ‘Kind of,’ and I said, ‘That was me. Go f— yourself!'”

Even after all this, she began her acting career promptly after relocating to Petaluma. Her parents were reluctant about her choice and insisted that she get a 4.0-grade point average and work on her off days. At the age of 13, she landed a role in her first film “Lucas” which eventually made the bullying much worse.

However, she did graduate with a 4.0 and is currently busy with many new projects in the industry. Today she is one of the well-known actresses in the Hollywood industry.
