Will the HBO programme, What Happened, Brittany Murphy return for season 2? Catch up on all the updates down below!
Directed by Cynthia Hill, What Happened, Brittany Murphy? is a docu series that examines the death of the actress, Brittany Murphy. It features new footage and interviews with the actress’ close friends.
Producers say it ‘goes beyond the tabloid rumours to examine the impact of Hollywood’s sexism on her struggles, as well as lingering concerns about her relationship’.
Both episodes of the documentary debuted on HBO Max on October 14. The two-part documentary series, however, features interviews with Murphy’s former co-stars and examines ‘concerns’ relating to her husband, London-born screenwriter Simon Monjack, whom she married in 2007.
What happened to Brittany Murphy?
Murphy died in 2009, aged 32. The cause of her death was ruled as accidental, with the coroner blaming a combination of pneumonia and over-the-counter medications.
Will there be a season 2 of What Happened, Brittany Murphy?
As of February 2023, the series What Happened, Brittany Murphy is yet to be officially renewed for season 2. However, we expect the renewal announcements to be made soon. Stay connected with us, until then!
What could the season 2 plot be about?
It’s reported that the film will “go beyond the conspiracy theories and headlines [and features] new interviews by those closest to Brittany and new archival footage” too.
Initially after her death, LA-based coroner Ed Winter told the press that Brittany appeared to have died from natural causes. However, a later coroner’s report stated that the primary cause of her death was pneumonia, with additional secondary factors of multiple drug intoxication (in reference to a range of over-the-counter and prescription medications, likely taken to treat a respiratory infection) and anemia (a condition in which the body lacks healthy red blood cells).
Six months after her tragic passing, Brittany’s husband, Simon Monjack, was also found dead in their formerly shared home. His cause of death was recorded as acute pneumonia and severe anemia too.
At the time of her passing, Brittany’s family shared a statement saying: “A bright light that lit the world is forever dimmed, but will live on in the hearts of those that Brittany touched. Brittany was an incredibly loving and passionate person and an artist to her core.”
However, despite the officially recorded verdicts, alternative theories as to why Brittany (and Simon) passed away continued to be raised over the years, including one suggestion that their home was host to toxic mould.
Brittany’s father, Angelo Bertolotti also told the press he believed his daughter was poisoned, claiming heavy metals were found in high concentrations during her autopsy. Other reports citing ‘close sources’ and ‘friends’ of Brittany’s suggested she may have been battling a painkiller addiction.
One such source told The Sun, “Brittany has been living life on the edge. She definitely had a drug problem and we have all begged her to seek help.”
The docu-series will reportedly explore the actor’s final days and also look into various claims about the past of her late husband Monjack, whom director Cynthia Hill called “disturbed” in a recent interview.
“He was a disturbed individual who was used to conning people and Brittany was one of his last victims,” she told People. “There was a pattern of behaviour that became very obvious the more research that we did.”
Monjack’s mother and brother were both interviewed for the docu-series, along with a former fiancée of his who claims that he left her “pregnant and abandoned.”
The Expected Release Date
As the series hasn’t been officially renewed, there’s no release date for now. However, if the series receives a renewal soon, we may expect it to air by the end of 2023 or later in 2024.
What Happened, Brittany Murphy trailer breakdown
The official HBO Max trailer for What Happened, Brittany Murphy? accuses Monjack of lying about terminal brain cancer. Monjack was also accused of dating Elle Macpherson and Madonna. ‘Every single word out of his mouth was a lie,’ said one contributor.
Monjack himself died less than six months after Murphy – at the exact same LA house – and shockingly under the same conditions. ‘Brittany was so wonderful,’ said actress Kathy Najimy in the trailer. ‘There was nobody else like her.’
She goes on to describe how Monjack ‘came along’ when the star was suffering a ‘little dip’.’I think that’s where her judgment was muddled, and she became prey. We all were scared and freaked out. Like, “Who was this guy?”‘
Other contributors cast further suspicion on the narrative surrounding Murphy’s death. One said, ‘a healthy 32-year-old doesn’t just die,’ while another added: ‘Simon took her away. He made sure no one could get to her.’
How many episodes could there be if season 2 happens?
The previous season was a 2-part documentary series. Hence, if the makers decide to follow a similar pattern, the second season may also comprise 2 episodes – or more. However, there hasn’t been an official update as of yet!
Who’s involved in What Happened, Brittany Murphy?
The series will be directed by renowned documentary filmmaker Cynthia Hill (A Chef’s Life, Private Violence).
Speaking about signing up to the project Hill said, “I agreed to do this film because I think it’s a shame that Brittany’s promising life and career has been eclipsed by the circumstances of her death.”
She added, “I think it’s important to celebrate Brittany’s talent as we struggle to explain the tragic circumstances of her and Simon’s deaths.”
