Will there be a season 3 of The Purge?

USA Network greenlit the series for a second run in November 2018, which was released on October 15, 2018. Season 2 featured a new batch of cast members featuring Derek Luke, Max Martini, Paola Núñez and Joel Allen. Cindy Robinson was the only cast to reprise her role, however, this season she appeared as a character playing the role of Megan Lewis.

Having released two seasons in total, the series was sadly canceled back in May 2020. So therefore a third season won’t be happening.

Why was The Purge Canceled after two seasons?

The exact reason was never revealed however, some speculate that the reason behind its cancellation after airing for two seasons was due to its low ratings.

When the first season was released, “The Purge” was one of USA Network’s most-watched series, raking in about 2.3 million spectators each episode, as per Variety. Unfortunately, the second season failed to impress the viewers despite its first season’s immense success. Thereafter, the series was canceled by the network after the second season as the show saw a massive decline in viewership which was down by 50 percent from the first season as reported by Deadline. The other reason for its dismissal was because of the switch in programming on the NBCU Network.

In terms of ratings, the series scored 42 per cent out of 38 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average scoring of 5.51 out of 10. As per the website consensus, it states: “Bloated and boring, The Purge kills its own fleetingly fun premise and proves that not all stories work better on the small screen.”

Metacritic achieved an average score of 44 out of 100 based on 13 critics, implying “mixed or average reviews”.
