The Midnight Gospel is an upcoming adult animated sci-fi-fantasy television series created by Duncan Trussell and Pendelton Ward that premiered on Netflix on April 20, 2020, with a total of 8 episodes.
The series takes place in a Chromatic Ribbon which is a dimensional place. It revolves around Clancy Gilroy, a spacecaster who possesses an unlicensed multiverse simulator. With it, he wanders through strange and unusual worlds on the verge of catastrophe, querying some of the dwellers for his space cast. The queries are arising from the recent episodes of Duncan Trussell’s podcast ‘The Duncan Trussell Family Hour.’ Featuring guest stars include Stephen Root, Phil Hendrie, Jason Louv, Drew Pinsky, Trudy Goodman, Damien Echols, Michael Marcanio, Maria Bam, and Caitlin Doughty.
The Netflix animated series is penned by Mike L. Mayfield along with Trussell and Ward. It’s almost two years since the first season was released and fans have been anxiously awaiting for the second season to arrive but what do we know about it? Let’s find out.
Is The Midnight Gospel Season 2 renewed by the giant streamer?
The first season was released nearly two years ago and based on that assumption, Netflix is supposed to give the renewal announcement in early or mid-2021 but regrettably, no update was provided nor was the series greenlit for a second installment.
Nevertheless, considering the Covid-19 pandemic that has had a huge impact on the entertainment industry, Netflix will take longer than usual so it’s understandable. Keeping that in mind, delays are to be expected but once the production begins, it should not take longer as the series itself is an animated show and all they need to work on is through their computers.
Series creator Duncan Trussell previously talked about that matter; regarding the new season and disclosed that it’s all up to the giant streamer to make the call whether to have a second season or not.
“Obviously, there is a writhing part of me that is deeply in suspense, waiting for a decision to be made, one way or the other, and if I said that wasn’t there, everybody would know I was a horrible liar… But that being said, they let us make this crazy thing! To me, it’s just the wildest thing to imagine that any network would let me and Pendleton roll with this wild idea — and now, it’s living on Netflix forever,” added Trussell.
Release Date of The Midnight Season 2: When is it?
The Midnight Season 2 release date is not out at the moment since Netflix is still yet to renew the series.
However, if a second season is renewed, new episodes won’t arrive until late 2022 or mid-2023. However, an announcement is expected very soon. Let’s learn to be patient till then.
The Cast of The Midnight Gospel Season 2: Who’s in it?
The main protagonist of the series Clancy Gilroy played by Duncan Trussell will reprise his role in the upcoming season. It’s also likely that the other supporting characters will also return which includes-
- Duncan Trussell (as Clancy Gilroy)

- Stephen Root (as Bill Taft and several roles)
- Maria Bamford (as Butt Demon and several roles)
- Doug Lussenhop (as Daniel Hoops and several roles)
- Joey “Coco” Diaz (as Chuck Charles, Steve and several roles)

The Midnight Gospel Season 2 plot: What could the story be about?
It’s not known what the story could be but if Netflix greenlights the series for a second outing, it would probably concentrate on birth, loss, resurrection, transfiguration, and many more. Fans are expected to see beyond the cosmic journey and give more extent to the psychedelic adventure.
Peering towards the prospect, Duncan Trussell is optimistic. Speaking to Deadline in 2021, he said, “If you have any kind of magical powers, or even better, some connection to Netflix, give us a second season! Please, I want to make more. There are so many more stories to tell about The Chromatic Ribbon.”
Trussell previously shared his interest in making a new season in an interview to which he revealed: “[The world of the Chromatic Ribbon] is a very big world. I spent a long time with Pen working out all the details. Some people might see it and think some people are saying gibberish that something was absurd and unintended, but every brick in that structure, every piece of the puzzle is intentional and based on a lot of lore. It’s a very, very, very, very interesting big world, and I would love to explore that world for as long as I possibly can.”
So there you go, season 2 of The Midnight Gospel remains uncertain for now since Netflix has the full authority of renewing or cancelling the show but one thing for sure is that the creator is desperate to make a new season and has a lot more to say and so are the fans. Stay tuned for more!
