Netflix’s multicam comedy Disjointed actor Tone Bell is to join the cast of Survival of the Thickest alongside Tasha Smith. Tasha Smith appeared in Tyler Perry’s OWN series For Better or Worse. She also had a recurring role in the series Empire.
Survival of the Thickest is based on Buteau’s book that’s created by Buteau and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel. Buteau had a long-standing relationship with Netflix – thanks to her stand-up special, Michelle Buteau: Welcome to Buteaupia; serving as host of reality series The Circle, and will narrate the upcoming docuseries The Principles of Pleasure.
Buteau has also starred in the film Always Be My Maybe, series Tales of the City. She will also host the second season of Barbecue Showdown. For the series Survival of theThickest, Danielle will be serving as the showrunner. Linda Mendoza will be directing the first two episodes of the series. Mendoza directed episodes of the romcom series Never Have I Ever. Anne Hong from Mosaic will executively produce.
What will Tone Bell play in Survival of the Thickest:
As per latest reports, Tone Bell will play Khalil. Khalil is Mavis’ bestie. He’s a creative and talented artist who believes in leading a simple, hassle-free life. He makes affordable life choices and has always prided himself on that. But now in his very late 30s, he starts to question what really matters. He questions whether life is worth complicating for the right person or leading it simply the exact same way he’s always led.
Tasha Smith in Survival of the Thickest:
Smith will play the character of Marley. She’s an early 50’s self-made millionaire – a woman of NYC status who always has a fresh luxury manicure and the best day and night serums money can buy. She gives that Aries tell-it-like-it-is energy, but there’s still an ever present warm big sister vibe. She just wants the best for everybody, and knows what the best is. She takes care of herself and the people around her.

Survival of the Thickest centers on Mavis Beaumont (Michelle Buteau). Black, plus-size and newly single (not by her choice!), Mavis unexpectedly finds herself having to rebuild her life as a struggling stylist. She’s determined to not only survive but thrive with the support of her chosen family, a body-positive attitude, and a cute v-neck with some lip gloss. The scripted comedy is based on Buteau’s acclaimed book of essays.
