Simona Brown will officially be seen next in the upcoming biopic drama series ‘Freedom Hair.’
Multiple sources have reported that Brown has been cast as the lead role in ‘Freedom Hair’ in which she’ll be portraying the iconic Melony Armstrong set to be helmed by Oscar nominee writer/director Dianne Houston. Production for the drama is currently underway.
A Production of MPI, ‘Freedom Hair’ is inspired by the real story of Melony Armstrong (Simona Brown), an ambitious mother who went on to establish her very own hair styling to support her monetary independence but must overthrow unforeseen hindrances caused by influential cosmetology cartel and the whole of Mississippi’s state. Melony’s actions ushered several thousand African-American women within the state of Mississippi to come after her ambitions and acknowledge their very own entrepreneurial pursuits.
Joining Brown in ‘Freedom Hair’ included a list of ensembles like Lynda Gravatt, Sharon Conley, Marquita Goings, and Erica Tazel.
Serving as producers are Stacey Parks, Lana Link, and Rob Pfaltzgraff while Melony Armstrong, Kim Coleman, and Nick Reid serve as executive producers.
Brown was previously seen in the hit Netflix series “Behind Her Eyes.” The actress was most recently seen in “I Am Danielle” with Letitia Wright (”Black Panther”) on the UK’s Channel 4 or C4 network. Some of her television works include “Him,” “Roots,” “The Little Drummer Girl,” “Outlander,” “Guilt,” “The Night Manager,” “Grantchester,” “The Casual Vacancy,” “Run,” “Murdered By My Boyfriend,” and as the lead role in the popular C4/Netflix drama series “Kiss Me First.” Brown’s film laurels include playing Sophie in “Big Talk’s” feature “Man Up” with Simon Pegg. Simona Brown is repped by IAG and CAA.
It’s also worth mentioning that filmmaker Dianne Houston has penned and helmed several Television projects and was nominated for an Oscar for 1995 short film “Tuesday Morning Ride.” The nomination earned her the first African-American woman nominated for a live-action short film.
As of now, there is no official release date for “Freedom Hair.” Production kicked off this September and it’s most likely that more details will be out concerning the upcoming drama and how each of the characters will play out in the drama. Hopefully, they announce the air date soon along with a trailer. Fans can expect this much anticipated new drama to be out sometime in 2023.
