Jerry Bruckheimer produced National Treasure (starring Nicolas Cage) opened to a mixed critical reception in 2004. But the overwhelming response of the audience brought it a sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets in 2007. Though the second installment also garnered mixed reviews, it was a commercial success. While the sequel sets up the stage for the next installment with its 47th page of Book of Secrets, nothing has officially been confirmed regarding it as of yet. That said, here is everything we know so far about National Treasure three:
Will there be another National Treasure movie and release date?
Know what Jerry and Nicolas have to say –
In 2008, a threequel to the franchise was in plan with Jon Turteltaub confirming that it will take a while to develop it.
Further Bruckheimer also ignited hopes in fans about the threequel revealing that it is in the development stage, however, it has been over a decade and this film has not made any progress, leaving us guessing whether there ever will be a National Treasure three.
National Treasure 3: Cast and Plot?
Fortunately, Bruckheimer has said in a recent Reddit interview that National Treasure three is still a possibility. He and the lead actor, Nicolas Cage are currently working on a script for National Treasure. For the unvetted, Disney + has ordered a National Treasure TV series based on the storyline of the franchise. Thus, it is not yet clear whether the celebrated producer is referencing the tv series in which Cage would be returning as a guest star or the film. Whatever the case be, the showrunner is confident about the return of the original cast. However, Cage is not exactly keen about returning to the franchise.
With Bruckheimer having given us a bit of hope with his latest update on National Treasurer three, Nicolas has shed light previously on why Disney scrapped National Treasure which featured him in the central role.
From 2007 to 2011, Nicholas Cage delivered a few flops like The Sorcerer’s Apprentice which earned somewhere around 215 US $ against a hefty budget of $150 million, then came his Ghost RIder in 2007 which had just enough to get by with its over 100 million budget. And 2011 brought a major career shift for the actor with Drive Angry collecting just 41 million. His underperformed films never made us see Nicholas Cage as Ben Gates.
Here’s what exactly the actor said in response to National Secret three back then:
“The phone stopped ringing. It was like,’ What do you mean we’re not doing National Treasure 3? It’s been 14 years, why not,” Cage told GQ. “Well, Sorcerer’s Apprentice didn’t work, and Ghost Rider didn’t sell tickets. And Drive Angry just came and went.”
In an interview with Hollywood Reporter lately, the actor shattered the hopes for the third film of National Treasure by saying:
“So often these things we read about are just conjecture without any base or foundation to it. I feel the same about ‘National Treasure 3.’ It’s been 14 years. There’s no there, there. So, is it fun to think about? Sure.”
National Treasure Franchise is not Entirely Dead
With all that considered, National Treasure is still alive with its upcoming Disney + National Treasure tv series. According to Cage, the new project delayed the release of the third film of the franchise. That seems right as, In 2020, the series entered production, and that year, Chris Bremner joined the film’s cast as a scriptwriter.
The series follows the same world and storyline of the franchise, with a brand new cast consisting of Alexis Jess, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Zuri Reed, Jordan Rodrigues, Antonio Cipriano, Austin Walker, and Lyndon Smith, Justin Bartha. Barthan has been previously seen in the 2004 and 2007 National Treasure films.
The new show revolves around Jess Massons who attempts to unveil her family’s mysteries and finds a lost treasure along her way. We hope the series is as fulfilling as the franchise. Keenly looking ahead to it in midst of the uncertainty around the third part of the franchise.
