The co-creator of Mamma Mia, Judy Craymer revealed in June 2020, “I was close to saying I do, I do, I do, I do, I do to a third movie, until the current global situation got in the way.” As it has with most movies though.
“I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog,” she explained. “I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it.”
Right now, it seems as though the name of the game is to just wait, but that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate on what to expect from Mamma Mia 3. Here’s all that you need to know about the blockbuster movie, Mamma Mia 3!
Mamma Mia 3 renewal status: Will it be renewed or canceled?
As of right now, Mamma Mia 3 isn’t confirmed. However, some of the cast members have been hinting towards a possibility. The co-creator explained via Daily Mail that the franchise was meant to be a trilogy.
She also hinted at the possibility of new ABBA songs for Mamma Mia 3’s soundtrack. Baranski seemed on board with the idea as well, relaying (via TODAY Show) that her fellow cast members would gladly sign on for the next film. “All of them loved making the film”, she said.
Mamma Mia 3 release date: When’s it going to premiere?
Mamma Mia 3 hasn’t been renewed by the makers yet. That said, we do not have a specific release date. Craymer said that planning for the film would have been underway in 2020, but the pandemic put things on pause.
Ever since the second film premiered, fans have been (literally) singing Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! to the third film, but when that’ll happen is yet to be known.
Considering the fact that the previous two films had July release dates, the third movie (perhaps) would release next summer, if things commence this year. Summer 2023 might be more likely since it would allow for more time and mark five years since the second movie.

Mamma Mia 3 plot: What can we expect from the plot?
In the previous film, we saw that Sophie is pregnant. Later, she presents her newborn son to be christened. This leaves room for a new storyline that would revolve around her son. Without the risk of overusing the mother-daughter bond, as the viewers have kind of grown tired of that, we can expect the plot to build around Sophie’s son.
Also, Meryl Streep would most likely appear during the christening and post-credit scenes, as she’s known for refusing sequels. In the third film, we might also uncover what happens between Sam and Donna’s marriage. Furthermore, Harry disappeared after missing one ferry to Kalokairi. The sequel might also encompass this storyline.
Whether Mamma Mia 3 explores any of these details or opts for something different, fans surely hope a third film won’t be slipping through their fingers!
Mamma Mia 3 cast: Who would be in the star cast?
The whole cast members are likely to return, Seyfried revealed back in June last year.
“Listen, every single person in that movie would say yes in a heartbeat because we want to hang out with each other,” Seyfried told Collider.
“That’s what we talked about last time, like did we ever think that we’d end up here again on an island in Croatia?”
