After two incredible seasons, His Dark Materials is all set to come back with another season. The show was first released in the UK back on November 3, 2019, and after just a year gap, the second season was released in 2020. His Dark Materials season 3 is said to be the final outing based on Philip Pullman’s book The Amber Spyglass with a total of eight episodes.
Unfortunately, there’s still a long way before we can see the third season hit our screens. But fret not, filming has already begun even though there were few delays because of the ongoing pandemic. James McAvoy revealed in June that filming kicked off again in Wales after delays due to COVID.
“We’re doing that down in Wales at the moment,” McAvoy told BBC Breakfast. “I’m driving back down there in a couple of hours to do a big set-piece with my snow leopard Stelmaria, and I’m excited to be back for season three.”
According to McAvoy, we can look forward to “a lot of fisticuffs and a lot of explosions” in the “down and dirty” action. But the main question is, when will His Dark Materials season three premiere? Let’s find out everything you need to know below.
His Dark Materials season 3 release date: When is it?
In December 2020, BBC renewed the fantasy drama for a third season and the final outing. As for the premiere date, there is no specific date that was announced or is yet to be announced. However, The BBC confirmed that the final series of His Dark Materials will air in 2022.
Star James McAvoy has also suggested that the final series could arrive a little earlier, perhaps in January next year, or maybe after a few months “late.”
According to James McAvoy, he told BBC breakfast, “That kind of question is above my paygrade – but probably at the beginning of next year I reckon, just after Christmas,”
The third season will arrive at a much later date compared to the previous two seasons which were released consecutively. The first season was released in 2019 and the second season in 2020 respectively.

In the final series of His Dark Materials, the stars who will be returning are, Dafne Keen ( as Lyra Belacqua), Ruth Wilson (as Marisa Coulter), James McAvoy (as Lord Asriel Belacqua), Jade Anouka (as Ruta Skadi), Simone Kirby (as Dr. Mary Malone), Will Keen (as Father Hugh MacPhail), and Ruta Gedmintas (as Serafina Pekkala) will return for the third cycle.
Likely, we will also get to see Lewin Lloyd (as Roger) although he was dead he still appeared in the last few moments of season 2.
Some new characters have been added to stir the plot. Here are the names of the cast who will be joining to wrap up the final series: Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (as Commander Ogunwe), Jamie Ward (as Father Gomez), Amber Fitzgerald-Woolf (as Ama), and the three rebel angels Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (as Balthamos), Simon Harrison (as Baruch) and Chipo Chung (as Xaphania).
Helen McCrory, the voice behind Stemaria, Lord Asriel’s daemon who passed away this year is still to be officially addressed by the show makers.
