Will Cruel Summer be cruel to its fans and not drop season 2? Or will it let us savor the incredible scenes once again? Well, Freeform has confirmed season 2 even before the first season finale aired.
In a statement to TVLine, Freeform President, Tara Duncan said the renewal was an “easy decision”, which makes sense because Cruel Summer is now the network’s most-watched series ever (via Deadline).
Here’s everything you need to know about Cruel Summer season 2!
Cruel Summer Season 2: Recap!
The Cruel Summer plot revolves around a small Texas town girl, Kate. She was abducted. A girl named Jeanette goes from being a sweet and awkward outsider to the famous girl in town. But by 1995, she had become the most despised person in America. The series Cruel Summer follows the story of that girl.
The series Cruel Summer was created by Bert V. Royal. It stars Olivia Holt, Chiara Aurelia, Froy Gutierrez, Harley Quinn Smith, Brooklyn Sudano, Blake Lee, Allius Barnes, Michael Landes, and Nathaniel Ashton.
Cruel Summer season 2: Has it been renewed?
Yes, Cruel Summer season 2 has been renewed. It was renewed for the second season in June 2021. So, we expect that the second season of the series will soon be released. It will be released on Freeform.
Cruel Summer season 2 release date: When’s it going to air?
Executive producer Jessica Biel confirmed that Cruel Summer will return with new episodes in 2022.
Though no official release date has been given just yet, we wouldn’t be surprised if season two follows the same schedule as the first chapter. This implies we can expect the release of Cruel Summer season 2 as soon as April 2022.
Cruel Summer season 2 cast: Who’s going to be in it?
As of right now, there’s no official star cast list for season 2 revealed by the makers. However, we can expect most of the previous cast members to return. Our bet is on:
- Olivia Holt as Kate Wallis
- Chiara Aurelia as Jeanette Turner
- Froy Gutierrez as Jamie Henson
- Harley Quinn Smith as Mallory Higgins
- Brooklyn Sudano as Angela Prescott
- Allius Barnes as Vince Fuller
- Nathaniel Ashton as Ben Hallowell
- Michael Landes as Greg Turner
Blake Lee may not return for season 2. Martin Harris died in the very first episode, but he did return for a few scenes in flashbacks. Given the nature of Kate’s trauma, her abuser could potentially appear again in more flashbacks or even her memories in season two.

Cruel Summer season 2 plot: What to expect from the season 2 plot?
Assuming that season 2 would pick up from where the first season left off, we can surely see some deadly twists.
Of the shocking finale, showrunner Tia Napolitano told Decider: “We were already shooting and we came up with that final twist, which I think takes it to the next level.”
When talking about Jeanette’s deception, Napolitano explained: “What’s interesting is, technically, Jeanette never lies. She says, ‘I did not see Kate Wallis.’
“She didn’t [see her]. She heard her. I think that’s a hilarious line within the weirdness that is Jeanette. She probably thinks she’s on the honest side of it — she never laid eyes on Kate Wallis in the basement.” She continued: “We didn’t know about that for a long time.”
She continued, detailing how the storyline unfolded organically: “We laid out the season that we did from the beginning, from when I joined the project, that there was going to be some sort of misunderstanding between Kate and Jeanette about what went on in that house. We played around with what that was.”
“Again, we just kept making it better and better. And we wrapped the Mallory twist into it. We were already shooting — we might have been shooting Episode 4 — and we came up with that final twist, which I think takes it to the next level.”
According to Napolitano, the gripping ending even surprised the cast and crew.
“We watched Episode 10 with a lot of the cast, and Michelle Purple from Iron Ocean (Productions) reacted to the video of the cast seeing the final moment.
“Some people like Sarah Drew had no idea what was going to happen. I, of course, knew what’s gonna happen, and they were screaming. If you see me in the video, I’m just so proud overall by the response that I’m literally crying.”
But whether the new season will delve more into this deception and betrayal is undecided. Deadline’s initial report on the renewal suggested that season two could “feature a new story with the same cast or, in anthology form, use the device of two points of view using multiple timelines with a new group”.
