However, in May 2018, the filming of the 7th season was cancelled due to sexual misdeed testimonies carried against Nev Schulman, the director of the show. As all of these allegations turned out to be baseless, season eight was released by the makers on January 20, 2020.

On January 8, 2020, the last season of Catfish was released, which turned out to be a huge hit in terms of viewership as well as ratings. MTV, however, renewed the show of its ninth instalment just after season 8’s finale episode but didn’t announce the release date. Due to some changes in the format of the show, during the pandemic, creators had to tweak.
