Borgen returns with its fourth season after a decade and fans still can’t seem to get over the thrill and excitement it brought. Season four of the hit Danish political drama series premiered on April 2022, and it appears that many things have changed in the character’s lives but one thing that remains the same is they’re still struggling with complex power dynamics in both their private and professional lives.
“[Power is] this poison that just drips into your coffee. You think you’re just drinking coffee, but it’s just something bitter. It’s not good for you,” Sidse Babett Knudsen who plays Birgitte Nyborg notifies Tudum. “But power is also the opposite of not having power and not being heard and not being seen and not having any influence in anything. And I think it’s so connected to [Birgitte’s] identity, being in power, being heard, being a decision-maker. It’s addictive.”
Earlier, series creator Adam Price, who penned the last three seasons as well as the fourth season, spoke to The Times of London and was asked about the prospect of the show and its female lead. Price simply replied: “Never say never, he added. “No way. Birgitte is done.”
Currently, we do not know the specifics of the series returning with a fifth season since there’s been no concrete update but with a phenomenal fourth season, fans are desperately craving for season 5. Without further ado, let’s delve into details.
Will there be a season 5 of Borgen?
Actress Sidse Babett Knudsen (Birgitte) despite her success, revealed to The Times that the most asked frequent question has always been “Is there going to be another series?” And she says, “My initial response was, ‘Don’t touch it.’” Although the series did eventually return with a fourth season after nine years, little is known about season 5 as it has yet to be renewed.
Without a doubt, the fourth season was a massive success across the globe. Eventually everyone thought that the series was over for good until they proved us wrong by returning with season four almost a decade after the third season was released. Fans who have waited for so long for a new season were served with a full course satisfying meal but is there more to it? Of course, many are still hoping for the series to get renewed for a fifth season but it is not known if the story is willing to continue further. Or do we have to wait for years to get a new season again? We hope not.
As per cast members, it looks like the series may not return for good this time. The fourth season wrapped the story completely and stretching the story further will only ruin as some thinks that way. But yes, there’s always many ways to begin with a new story but for now, let’s wait and see if the series will even be renewed.
Borgen Season 5 Release Date
Netflix has yet to renew the series for a fifth season. Hence, an official release has not been announced and it will probably take a while but fans need to be patient until then.
The first season was released on September 26, 2010. The second season premiered on September 25, 2011. The third season was launched on January 1, 2013. The fourth season aired from February 13 to April 3, 2022. Unfortunately, the showrunners haven’t said a single word about a possible season 5 but we’re optimistic about the show’s future given the massive success of its last season.
On the off chance, it gets renewed this year, it is expected that season 5 will be out sometime in 2023.

Borgen Season 5 Plot: What to expect?
Plot details for season 5 of Borgen are not revealed. However, the story would continue from where the fourth season ended.
Talking about the fourth season, the show’s comeback after nearly a decade, series creator Adam Price in an interview said that “The game has definitely changed. He continued, “It’s become a faster and dirtier game – the politicians have to change their ways, and that has changed them as well. The characters have moved into a different chapter in their lives – Birgitte is now in her early 50s, and if you have been so long in politics as she has, you have been changed by that as a person.”
Price also explained his central character’s trajectory adding: “The first time you taste it, it’s amazing, because you actually get to realize many of the idealistic dreams you had as a young politician,” he said. “But power is a slow working poison as well. And it drips into your cup of coffee every day, until, as a politician, you’re almost not able to taste that it’s coffee anymore.”
The fifth season will show us more about female leadership and its impact and how she balances her professional life and personal life– like motherhood.
Stay tuned for more!
