Fans of the Accel World anime series have been patiently waiting for season 2 ever since the first season aired from April 7, 2012, to September 22, 2012. To put it, it’s been more than a decade since the first season dropped although 2 more OVAs were launched in 2013 indicating that the anime series might have ended for good.
Over the years, the Accel World fanbase has gradually died down but there are still some who are still awaiting the second season with little to no information concerning the second installment. Let’s find out whether studio Sunrise has any plans in returning with more episodes.
Will Season 2 of Accel World Ever Happen?
Keep in mind that whether an anime returns with another season or not entirely depends on the profit they made or sometimes it may be a different case. In terms of sales, Accel World sold over 9,000 copies per disc of Blu-ray during season 1. It was a huge number back in 2012, and it played a significant role during that time. The movie “Accel World: Infinite Burst” collected around $1 million which premiered only in 19 theatres.
Henceforth, the profit made by the Accel World franchise was very low. So we conclude that season 2 of Accel World might probably never happen and the fact that there have been no official updates till now.
Accel World Season 2 Source Materials
The first season followed Volumes 1 to 4 of the light novel series so if there is a second season, it will follow from Volume 5. The movie Accel World: Infinite Burst covered parts of Volume 19.
As of March 2022, there have been 26 volumes circulated in Japan for the Accel World light novel series which has plenty of source materials to cover season 2 and more seasons.
Accel World Season 2 Release Date: When is it?
There is no release date available for Accel World season 2. The reason why there is no update is that the studio Sunrise has its hands full with other successful anime and has no time to produce Accel World for another season as it is less profitable.
On the off chance, if the studio decides to bring it back, it might take some time to promote the new season. So it’s likely that the second season will fall only sometime in 2023 or may even go beyond that. Expect an announcement in the coming days although we’re not sure when.
